FEATURING SVG AND THE LATEST AIRPORT UPDATE
AIRPORT UPDATE LOOKING AHEAD!
Progress continues on the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Argyle International Airport. Set to open in late 2013, the newest updates from the International Airport Development Company (IADC) include earth and site works. The Chatoyer-Che Contingent (the name given to the field work force) has completed 72.5 percent of the earthworks on the runway, aprons and taxiways. When completed, the Argyle International Airport will have a paved runway of 9,000 feet in length and 150 feet in width and will consume 275 acres of land. The passenger terminal building will have a domestic terminal and an international terminal. The building will have three floors with 145,000 square feet of floor space, and is designed to handle about one and a half million passengers annually. The airport will accommodate jets as large as the Boeing 747-400s and will allow for direct flights to St. Vincent and the Grenadines from USA, Canada, Europe and Central and South America.
• The base laying and pavement works will begin in September 2012. IADC intends to do the pavement works in-house and to set up its own industrial complex, complete with stone crusher, asphalt and concrete batching plants, and supporting equipment. They have already arranged to recruit several engineers and technicians from Cuba, who will manage the industrial complex and execute the pavement works.
• Work on the terminal building continues apace and the building remains on schedule to be completed by contract date of December 2013. As of May 2012, the contractor, Overseas Engineering Construction Company (OECC), had completed 23 percent of the work on the building.
• Apart from supervising the earthworks and assisting with the supervision of the works on the terminal building, the in-house design team has been working on the designs for the airport pavements, turning heads, hydraulic structures as well as access and circulation roads for the airport.
