Carnival To Be Launched May 5thCarnival will be officially launched on Saturday May 5th at the Solidarity Inc. Car Park on Bay Street in Kingstown and Coordinator of Shows Anthony Dennie promises that the shows committee of the Carnival Development Corporation (CDC) is ready to deliver another good production. Speaking last Tuesday at a news conference held at the CDC’s Victoria Park-based office, Dennie said that every year they learn from their mistakes and therefore every year things are done better.He said that on May 5th, trucks loaded with speakers and disc Jockeys will carry out whistle stops on the Leeward and Windward side of the island while this year the CDC will be working even more closely with the Police Force to ensure safe revelry. Dennie also said that this year the CDC will not be holding events at Heritage Square in the morning as was done last year. He is, however, encouraging private promoters to take the opportunity to use the square. At 6 p.m. the masses are expected to gather at the Solidarity Inc. Car Park on Bay Street for the official launch of Vincy Mas 2012. The launch will see the first public appearance of the Miss SVG Contestants while the various Mas Bands will show their wares. A number of the J’Ouvert bands will also display their 2012 product. The highlight of the launch is the various New Song Competitions. The local artistes will take to the stage where they will compete in the New Song Calypso Competition, the New Song Soca Competition and the New Song Ragga Soca Competition. There will also be an Extempo competition. Tuesday was the closing date for entries and Dennie said that entries have been encouraging. The New Song Calypso competition was in 2011 won by Kahalia ‘Queen Bee’ Beache with ‘Protest for that.’ The New Song Soca Competition was won by Armstrong ‘Strong’ Williams with ‘Tie Me,’ while the new addition, Ragga Soca New Song Competition was won by Shernell ‘Skarpyon’ Williams with ‘She Tell Me’. The Extempo Competition was as usual was won by ‘Blakey’ Cuffy. Dennie said that in 2012, entertainment will come from the Rural Carnivals and various other shows. The Miss SVG Pageant will be held on Saturday June 2nd. Fantastic Friday June 22nd, Ragga Soca Friday June 29th, Junior Carnival Saturday June 30th, Junior Pan Fest Sunday July 1st, Junior Calypso/Soca Tuesday July 3rd, Panorama Thursday July 5th, Miss Carival Friday July 6th, Soca Monarch Saturday July 7th, Dimanche Gras Sunday July 8th, J’Ouvert Monday July 9th, Evening Street Party Monday July 9th and Mardi Gras Tuesday July 10th.
