40 Years Of Carnival To Be Highlighted
Dennis Ambrose, former long-standing Chairman of the Carnival Development Corporation (CDC), has been tasked with chairing a Special Activities Sub-committee for the 40th Anniversary of Vincy Mas, 2017.
Addressing the Media Launch of the Vincy Mas 2017 progrmme of activities last Tuesday evening, Ambrose outlined a series of events which he said, will highlight aspects of Vincy Mas over its four decades, 1977 – 2017.
The events are expected to be decentralized, he said, saying that the first event, the ‘All Stars Show’ scheduled for February 18, will be held at a venue (yet to be announced) on the Leeward side of the island.
This event will commemorate the first decade, 1977 to 1987, and take into account the event of a similar name that was pioneered by music producer Granville Straker.
"On this occasion, we will showcase many of the artistes whose music and performances made an indelible impression on the carnival culture at that time,” Ambrose said.
The second decade, 1987 to 1997, which was the era of the coming of age of memorable music bands such as Touch, Blaksand and X-A-Dus, will be revisited with the staging of ‘Clash of the Bands’, an event that was the brainchild of the late Glen Jackson.
This event will take place on March 18 at a location, still to be decided, on the Windward side of the island. And the third decade, 1997 to 2007, will see patrons journeying to Union Island for an event called ‘Re-Union’. The 40th Anniversary Sub-committee is collaborating with the Easterval Organizing Committee, Ambrose explained, and this event will coincide with the annual Easter activities on that Grenadines island.
These events will lead up to the grand official launch of Vincy Mas 2017, which will take place on May 6. A special all-embracing event, dubbed EVO 4.0, is scheduled for Friday 7th July, replacing the Miss Carival Show. It is expected to be a package filled with nostalgia, with the unfolding of highlights of the unique Vincy Mas product through its 40 years.
Ambrose assured, "The Shows and Marketing committees are energized and rearing to go, to make this year the best ever,” he said, adding that the CDC was already anticipating this year to be a landmark one.
